To keep your milk tasting fresh, prevent culturing and off-flavors, rinse and wash your jars well!
Here are the steps we follow and the reasons why:
- After we empty a jar of milk, we rinse it well (and the lid) with cool to cold water. This takes off the casein (milk protein). Do NOT use hot water for this step as it causes the casein to stick like glue (casein is an active ingredient in Elmer's Glue or used to be).
2. Then, we rinse it with hot water to get the cream and fat off as this makes washing faster and easier.
- Keep them separate from other dirty dishes, food, and cloth that have been washed in commercial soap. The rubber part on the lid picks up smells easily.
4. We then wash the jar and lids in a SAFE detergent that leaves no residue and then they are sanitized in hot water, and inspected for cleanliness.
- After rinsing and washing well with hot water, let air dry. Turning them upside down in a dish strainer works well or place in the oven on a low heat.
- Jars must be completely rinsed and air dried before the lids/and rings are put on. If they are not, it may cause mold or smells to flourish and this will affect the milk’s flavor and keeping ability
